Corporate abductions are on the rise, according to a US Department of State report. With increased globalisation comes an increased risk for company, academic, news media and non-profit personnel of being seized and used to negotiate payment, political ends, or just publicity for a cause.

Short-term kidnapping where people are held long enough to draw large sums from their cash machines has become prevalent in some South American cities, and cash is only one thing people stand a chance of losing .. injury and even death is certainly a risk along with the theft of corporate secrets.

A professional response involves the creation of a kidnap plan, authorised at board level and developed by a team with wide ranging skills from public affairs to electronic communications to hostage negotiation. This will involve consideration of such things as kidnap insurance, access to executive areas and facilities, assessing vulnerabilites at the executive's home, keeping records of friends and frequent movements of the people being protected, proof of life information (such as the name of the family cat), and the training of the executives concerned.

The plan will also cover what happens after an abduction, particularly how the communication will be conducted between kidnappers, the organisation and the authorities.

Clearly part of the plan might involve asking executives to carry a GPS tracking device with a hidden alarm button. In the immediate aftermath of an abduction, this may allow security officers and authorities to disrupt the kidnappers' plans and rescue the executive before too much harm is done. Or it may provide vital information about the whereabouts of the victim.

KoolTrax™ Ranger provides live GPS position tracking with boundary and no-movement alerts and is finding increased interest with close-protection officers and where the security of high value or vulnerable people is required.

Refs:
http://www.state.gov/m/ds/rls/98077.htm
Encyclopedia of Security Management, by John Fay
